Day 432/3 – Saturday 1st/2nd July 2006
Saturday
A “mixed bag of emotions” day today.
We were due to go to mum and dad’s (Lancashire) for a BBQ today. kp has been VERY apprehensive all week about her op, and it keeps coming to the front of her thoughts over and over again, despite her best efforts to think of other things.
Today, I was a pratt and said the wrong thing at the wrong time, really sending kp on a downer. I had walked the dogs and was getting kp up and ready.
She wanted to wear some beige (light material) trousers to mum and dad’s, but it has a button at the top and 2 pieces of cord which are supposed to be tied in a bow.
kp:- I am going to wear these beige trousers.
dp:- ok
kp:- But it’s got a button at the top.
Now, a button (to me) means “trips to the loo with Karen” as she can’t undo or do it up herself.
dp:- Can you not wear these blue ones (elasticated waist) ?
A little bit of discussion ensued. And then kp got very upset. Very very upset. I don’t think it was about me per se, more about the fact that she didn’t like to have to wear certain things because of her disability. She doesn’t like to be reliant on other people for anything, and to have to change her clothing because it was too much of a faff for me really got her down.
I felt so guilty, but no amount of backpedalling could appease her
We sat out the front and discussed it for AGES. She said she was too upset to go to Lancashire, so we ruled that out.
After about 1 hour of discussion, we had summed up her feeling so bad on……
- The frustration she has with her body and it’s limitations
- Her worrying over the op on Thursday
- Me being a pratt and saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
From her being adamant to not going to my family for the night, she was happy to give it a go. I was pleased as I knew a trip away would take her mind off things.
We went to mum’s for the BBQ. They had a paddling pool out. The kids weren’t too keen on going in, but the dogs were happy to fill the void.
After the barbecue, we gave Jamie his birthday presents (2 years old this week) and Sophie HELPED him open them !
England v Portugal today and we went inside to watch that while Jane and Guy kindly took the kids back home so there was no distraction. We enjoyed the match, despite the result.
Today, Andy Murray was playing Roddick and kp was very keen to catch the match, so a lot of time was spent inside watching Murray whip Roddick’s ass. It was a cracking match and kp really enjoyed it.
With the sports over, we went to Jane’s to have Chip Butties watching Big Brother and then retired. The kids had retired before we got home as the Murray match went on past their bedtime.
kp and I slept marvellously without any covers on as it was so hot.
Sunday
Today, we got up early (about 8am) !!!! Had breakfast and some laughs with the Boxall clan before returning home and enjoying some of the baking sun and some snoozes.
It was a good weekend and nicely distracted kp from the op.
Here they are fast asleep……
