Sadly no lesson

There were no lessons booked in for me today, despite me booking them last week. Wasn’t until just before I left that I realised I had been booked in for next tuesday and wednesday at 2pm :-(

But, I’m still glad I went, ‘cos I took TWO exams !!!

I had been really struggling with Principles of Flight and Performance Planning. I now realise why these subjects had took me so long !! They were TWO Exams !!! Silly me !!!!! For some reason, I thought they were one.

So, I took the first one, dreading a near fail, and achieved an 82.5%. When I’d done that and the realisation of there was no lesson booked came, I thought I’d do the other exam too and got 90%. Well happy with that !!

Which leaves me only 2 exams – yay !!! Human Performance (how drunk you’re allowed to be to fly ;-) and Radio Telephony Communications.

Really pleased at getting these 2 exams behind me, because it means I can ratchet up the rate of ppl lessons and make the most of the rest of the Summer.

Unfortunately, next week, I can only get one lesson in because it’s jam packed with kp stuff. But full steam ahead after that.

    Any tips for studying for the performance and the principles exams? I have them to do and i am finding it really to get any info.

    It’s a good question Penny. I can totally understand where it’s coming from too. I found it some of the hardest material technically, but things that helped me……..

    Get Wagtendonk’s Principles of Helicopter Flight and use that to understand how a heli flies. Don’t feel you have to understand it 100% for PPL, but go for it if you can.

    And something Steve, my instructor, suggested……..Learn the vector diagrams of total rotor thrust, lift, drag etc….AND be able to draw them from memory.

    Both of those tips will OVERprepare you for the PPL exam but it’s good knowledge to have in the brain.

    Hi David

    I finally passed my Flight Performance and Planning exam today. Thanks for the advice it was really helpful – back to the books now for the Principles of Flight exam – last one bar the radio licence verbal test.

    Still dont get this techy stuff though so really chuffed i passed and dont have to do it again.

    Steve is my instructor too – small world ! – i am trying not to fly at the moment so that I concentrate on my exams.

    Well done Penny !!!! Principles of Flight isn’t as hard as you think it will be, when you look at the study material. You don’t need to know it to the n’th degree, a good knowledge of the basics should be enough. Sounds like you’re ahead of me on the theory front. I have human performance, radiotelephony (theory) and radiotelephony (practical) to do. Need to crank up my revision a bit I think.

    How did you find the Human Performance one ?

    I didn’t realise you were a student of Steve. :-)

    Hi David

    havent been flying for ages – have you done your exams yet? – the Human Performance exam i thought was the easiest. if you have done a little biology its not too bad but as with all things it just depends on how you think.

    I failed my principles of flight in December and havent had the time to go back – lost my nerve a little too as i find this exam a little scary cos i am not the technical type.

    But i need to get on with again and will call in soon to get sorted.

    Hopefully I’ll see you over there sometime – really pleased to hear the Steve passed his instrument training.

    Sorry about the late reply to the comment. For some reason, I wasn’t notified about it. Found it by chance. Thanks for the heads-up re the Human Performance exam. I can totally understand anyone failing the Principles of flight one. It’s technical even for a techy (which is my background). And yes, it would be lovely to put a face to the name ! :-)

    I’m booked for thursday and at the moment, the weather’s looking good, but …….. I’ll say no more !! ;-)
